Albany Town Hall will honour the late Queen Elizabeth II on her National Day of Mourning this week by lighting up in purple and opening its doors for the community to sign a book of condolences.
Albany had the privilege of hosting visits by Her Majesty in 1954 and 1977, with her funeral taking place this coming Monday, September 19 and a public holiday announced for Thursday, September 22 as a day of mourning.
In a mark of respect across next week, the Town Hall will light up in purple. This will begin on Sunday, September 18 and run through to Friday, September 23.
There is also a community book of condolences for the Queen currently in the Town Hall, and this will be available all next week. The Hall will also be open from 11am to 5pm on the National Day of mourning next Thursday for anyone who would like to leave a message.
Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington said the City of Albany wanted to play its part in honouring Queen Elizabeth II and invited anyone in the community who wanted to pay their respects to visit the Town Hall.
“The book of condolences will be available in the Town Hall all week so anyone who wants to leave a message we welcome you to do so,” he said.
“Queen Elizabeth II was a much loved monarch and respected the world over and her passing is a sad time for many and we wanted to offer our community a place to go to reflect and remember her reign.”
The Royal Family has encouraged mourners to make a donation to charity rather than lay flowers to remember the Queen.
