THE Harrietville community is encouraged to share its views on the future use of Council-owned land known as ‘The Tailings’.
Council owns the 11.9-hectare site of township-zoned land at 147a Great Alpine Road.
During the development of the 'Harrietville - Our Future: Strategic Master Plan' in 2016, the community identified a need for more land to be available for housing in Harrietville.
This area was identified as a key site for subdivision.
Alpine Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas said an investigation into the viability of subdividing the land - particularly the management of wastewater - was completed last year.
“This investigation found that the site could be a viable option for subdivision,” she said.
“We have since received interest from a privately owned Victorian based company that would like to investigate potential to use part of the site to create a small-scale, boutique, eco-tourism development”.
“We want to know what the community thinks - should The Tailings be subdivided for more housing, be retained as an open space, a portion of the site used for a small-scale, boutique, eco-tourism development, mixed use or put to a different use altogether?”
To best capture the views of the Harrietville community, an online survey is available to complete here: bit.ly/HarrietvilleTailings
Cr Nicholas said Council wants to know what the whole community would like to see on The Tailings site.
“We know people are busy, but this is a decision that will shape Harrietville for the future, community input is important to Council” she said.
“Council owns the land, but the community will experience the direct impacts of how the land is developed.
“We strongly encourage everyone who lives, works and owns property in Harrietville to share their views with this quick survey.”
