Community called on for e-scooter co-design workshop

Community is invited to have their say about how an e-scooter trial will operate throughout the Albany CBD at an upcoming co-design workshop with community and e-scooter providers.

Elected Members granted a 12-month trial of the e-scooters to companies Bird Rides and Beam Mobility at the September Ordinary Council Meeting.

As part of the trial Bird Rides and Beam Mobility are bringing local community together to discuss logistics such as slow zones, operating areas and no ride zones at a one-off co-design workshop.

Mayor of Albany Dennis Wellington said in order to succeed, the community have to be engaged in the project from the get go.

“E-scooters are a convenient mode of transport that’s easy to use and quicker than walking,” he said.

“To make the trial work the locals need to have their say about how the scooters can be used in a way that benefits everyone. This will cover things like the speed of the e-scooters, where they are able to be used, reporting mechanisms and safety procedures.

“Having these elements ironed out before the e-scooters hit the streets is vital for a positive user experience and positive community perception of the transport.”

Bird Senior Manager for Policy and Partnership Deevya Desai said e-scooters will bring economic benefits to the community such as an increase in spending and support for local businesses.

“We are delighted to be bringing micromobility to Albany with our latest e-scooter, the Bird Three. We commend the City and Mayor Wellington for a demonstrated commitment to providing both residents and visitors with convenient, affordable and sustainable transportation options” she said.

Beam Mobility General Manager (ANZ) Tom Cooper said partnering with the City of Albany on this project is exciting.

“Beam Mobility is thrilled to be partnering with the City to provide micromobility to the region and offer a safe and sustainable way to travel,” he said.

“We are committed to engaging with local community members and businesses to ensure discussions around the safe operation of e-scooters is a priority from the outset.”

A Community Co-Design Workshop will be held at Retravision Stadium from 4:30pm on 20 October.
