Nominations now open for 2023 Yass Valley Australia Day Awards

Nominations for the 2023 Yass Valley Australia Day Awards are now open, with the community called upon to nominate outstanding individuals or groups who make a significant contribution and difference to the Yass Valley.

This year sees a change to the categories with residents now able to nominate an event of the year, sportsperson of the year and volunteer of the year.

The awards recognise outstanding achievement, or an event held, during the past year and/or contribution to the local community. Nominations are now open until 9 December 2022.

All award winners will be announced at an Australia Day event held on Thursday 26 January 2023.

Awards categories for the 2023 Australia Day awards are:

Citizen of the Year Young Citizen of the Year Sportsperson of the Year Event of the Year Community Group of the Year Volunteer of the Year

Conditions of entry:

Nominations can be made by an individual or organisation. Nominees must be Australian citizens. The award cannot be made to a Councillor, State or Federal politician. The award cannot be made to a current employee of Yass Valley Council. A person cannot receive a second award. The award must be for work performed principally within the Yass Valley. Only one Award is to be presented each year for each category Regard will be given to a person’s community activities in the year immediately prior to receipt of the Award, as well as their past community services. Young Citizen of the Year (up to 25 years of age) should be someone who has excelled in community or academic pursuits. The Event nominated should have a strong community focus (not necessarily a commercial one) and be well patronised. Sportsperson’s nominated should have excelled in sporting achievements in the year prior to Award. Community groups and volunteers nominated should be actively involved in the community and based entirely on volunteer work. They should not receive a salary or wage for the work they do Community work of a high calibre will be considered for Australia Day Awards. The person should have strong ethical and community values. The nomination should explain the achievements and background of the nominee and the reasons for nomination. The recipient of each award will be decided by the nomination panel, the panel consists of the mayor and two councillors All nomination forms and material submitted remains the property of Council. Previous years unsuccessful nominations, predate up to 3 years must be available for re-nomination in future years (this clause does not apply to Event of the year, Young Citizen of the year and Sportsperson of the year award categories.

The assessment panel for the Australia Day awards will consist of the Mayor and two Councillors.

Nominations may be submitted by community groups, organisations and individuals using the nomination form available here. Hard copies of the nomination form are available from Yass Library and Council’s Administration Office, located at 209 Comur Street, Yass.

Nominations will close at 5pm on Friday, 9 December 2022
