Freo's urban forest continues to grow

The City of Fremantle’s urban forest has continued to grow, with another 1926 trees planted during the 2022 winter planting season.
A total of 901 trees were planted in natural areas like bushland and foreshore reserves, while 1025 trees were planted in Fremantle’s streets and parks.
City of Fremantle Parks and Landscape Manager Ryan Abbott said the 1926 trees planted this year exceeded the 2022 target in the City’s Urban Forest Plan by 846.
“Our Urban Forest Plan was adopted in 2017 with the aim of planting an average of 1000 trees per year and to increase the City’s tree canopy cover to 20 per cent by 2027,” Mr Abbott said.
“Since the plan was adopted a total of 8492 trees have been planted, so we’re now more than 3000 trees ahead of our target.
“With the weather starting to warm up we’ll soon be getting out there to water all the new street trees we’ve planted over winter.
“If residents have had a new tree planted on their verge they can help to keep it alive by giving it an additional watering of two or more buckets each week. If anything happens to their new street tree it would be great if they could let us know.
“For people who would like a new street tree planted on their verge now is the time to submit your request so we can include it in our planting schedule for next winter.”
The benefits of increasing Fremantle’s tree canopy cover include making our suburbs cooler by reducing the Urban Heat Island effect, beautifying our streets and providing habitat for local wildlife.
At any time of year Fremantle residents can apply to have a street tree planted on their verge at no cost to the property owner.
Once an application for street tree has been received by our Parks and Landscape team, they will undertake an inspection of your verge by April and contact you about what type of tree is most suitable. Planting will occur between May and August to ensure the tree has the best chance of survival.
