Fremantle projects update
City of Fremantle 20 Oct 2022

The City of Fremantle has been working on several projects over the past few months, completing tasks from the 2022-23 budget and doing our part to help make Fremantle a more enjoyable space for the community.

It can be hard to stay up to date with all the changes, so we’ve tried to make life a little easier by breaking down some of the activity that’s happened around the city.

PORT BEACH SAND NOURISHMENT

The Port Beach Sand Nourishment project has begun, which involves ‘rainbowing’ sand dredged from Fremantle Ports Deep Water Channel into the nearshore area.

Between July and October 2022, 78,000m³ of sand was placed onto Port Beach, which is slightly over half of the total for the project.

The dredging for this year will wrap up on 22 October, with works recommencing after summer to complete the total placement of up to 150,000m³ of sand on the beach.

SOLAR LIGHTS AT SOUTH BEACH CAR PARK

A welcome addition to the South Beach car park is the recently installed solar lighting. The lights use motion sensors and operate at 40 percent brightness until movement is detected.

The project is just one of over 100 projects being completed as part of the 22-23 budget.

FLORENCE PARK PLAY SPACE

Florence Park has also had some love, with a new swing set the latest addition to this hidden gem.

The small pocket park nestled in South Freo is often forgotten about, but it’s a great space for kids to play.

GIL FRASER GRANDSTAND

The timber floor and bench seating in the historic grandstand at Gilbert Fraser Oval in North Fremantle has been refurbished.

The iconic Grandstand was built in 1913, for spectators to watch both football and cricket matches.

The lighting at Gil Fraser has also been upgraded.

NORTH FREO LANDSCAPING PROJECT

The North Fremantle Principle Shared Path (PSP) project was completed in September 2021 with planting added in July this year.

This saw 196 trees and 7,600 understorey plants being planted along the bike path by the City of Fremantle, thanks to funding from Main Roads.

The City was in charge of the planting design, procurement, and installation and will be maintaining the landscape going forward.

ROUND HOUSE

A new jarrah carriage for the Arthur Head cannon was among recent restoration works at the iconic Round House.

The new carriage, replacing the one from 1955 was made by Justin Elvin from the City’s maintenance contractors.

Other conservation works at the Round House included the restoration of doors, windows, and stairs and the repair of the well in the courtyard.
