Protect the region: Hells Gate Dam

Ahead of tonight’s Federal budget, Charters Towers Regional Council is concerned that the Albanese Government may not maintain the $7bn in funding allocated to Hells Gates Dam.

The Hells Gate project was community driven because there is a need for water security in Northern Australia said Mayor Beveridge.  “Without the funding to develop this key infrastructure from the Federal Government, we will not secure the long-term future of North Queensland.”  

This is not the time to slash funding.  The Dam is needed now.

The Hells Gate Dam project has been projected to create thousands of regional jobs and deliver millions annually to the North Queensland economy. 

Mayor Beveridge said “The Burdekin Dam was the last dam built in North Queensland, almost 40 years ago, and the population has doubled since then. It is vital that the $7 million funding promised is maintained.

Since the Pandemic, more and more people are moving to regional areas to live and work and we, as governments need to provide long term infrastructure to sustain economic prospects and protect future generations”.
