The newly refurbished Rockingham Arts Centre (RAC) on Kent Street will host the Elysium exhibition by artist Louise Elscot from Saturday 5 – Sunday 27 November 2022.
The exhibition will run Wednesdays to Sundays from 10am – 4pm and will showcase a series of sculptural works dedicated to the women and children who lost their lives in Thomas Peel’s failed Clarence Settlement, which was established south of Fremantle in 1830.
As part of the exhibition at the RAC Elscot will provide a free artist’s talk on Sunday 13 November 2022 from 2pm – 3pm.
The talk will give visitors an insight into the process Elscot followed for gathering information on the project, the development of her ideas, and the gathering of materials to create her sculptural pieces.
City of Rockingham Deputy Mayor Hayley Edwards encouraged community members to visit the exhibition at the RAC.
“Earlier this year the City carried out refurbishment works to the RAC to help transform the space into a progressive boutique gallery, which allows for an exciting and diverse exhibition program to be presented for the community,” Deputy Mayor Edwards said.
The refurbishments were a key action in the City’s Cultural Development and the Arts Strategy and we are proud to now be able to host exhibitions such as Elysium for community members to explore.“Louise Elscot’s art is thought-provoking and Elysium will give visitors an opportunity to learn more about a significant chapter in Western Australia’s colonial history.”
Ms Elscot said she was excited to bring the exhibition to the Rockingham Arts Centre.
“I’m excited to bring my sculptural works to the Rockingham Arts Centre, which is located in an area that is synonymous with the Peel name,” Ms Elscot said.
“My works take inspiration and tell the stories of some of the courageous families who immigrated to Western Australia for a new life in the early 1830s. These families helped sow the seeds of the early Swan River colony in the Rockingham and Fremantle districts.”
