Rio Tinto and the City of Albany have extended their partnership to provide dedicated youth support in Albany for the next three years and support new projects and initiatives that drive youth engagement.

The renewal of the partnership aims to establish positive relationships with local young people, promote social connection in the youth space and increase the voice of the youth across Albany.

The City and Rio Tinto will be delivering three major projects across the three years that include the inaugural Albany FIRST Lego League and a new youth active program called GO YOUth.

GO YOUth is a new active program providing high school aged students with access to group fitness classes, supervised gym sessions, casual sport program and access to the pool.

FIRST Lego League is a STEM project with two challenges; Robot Challenge involving building and programming a LEGO robot and Innovation Project where participants solve a real world problem.

Delivery of the City’s Youth Friendly Albany Plan is the third project which will encompass school holiday programs and Youth Week activities.

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Sharpe thanked Rio for their continued support of youth engagement and development in Albany.

“Supporting young people to thrive through positive social interactions, engaging events and development opportunities is critical to the future vibrancy and diversity of our City,” he said.

“The initiatives aim to improve youth retention in Albany with support networks for young people that make sure they have a voice about the topics that are important to them.

“Delivering targeted youth activities is a key component of the City’s Youth Friendly Albany Plan. Partnering with Rio Tinto enables us to meet this aim while continuing to make Albany a more youth friendly community.”

Rio Tinto Manager Community Relations Justin Francesconi said they were thrilled with the outcomes achieved from the partnership with the City.

“We are passionate about developing the youth network in our regional communities,” he said.

“Albany’s local young people have so much to offer. This partnership enables us to create opportunities for Albany’s young people to thrive and explore their potential.”
