Owners of private swimming pools or spas in Western Australia must be installed with a safety barrier and the City of Fremantle is required to conduct inspections on pools and spas within the City every four years.
Inspections are scheduled from their construction year, so if you have not been contacted recently, you will be contacted within the coming years.
Drowning is one of the leading causes of preventable death in children 0–4 years of age in Australia and maintaining a compliant pool area set up is one of the best ways to minimise the risks.
Find out more on our private swimming pools page including barrier requirements, regulations and legislation that govern pools and spas in Western Australia, the inspection process as well as information on decommissioning swimming pools and spas.
What you can doWe also encourage you to do regular self-assessments in between inspections by going through the Rules for pools and spas—a simple checklist and using it to guide you on what to check, fix and maintain.
This checklist is not intended to replace and is not as effective as a City of Fremantle inspection.
Keep WatchRoyal Life Saving WA’s Keep Watch program has been advising Australian parents and carers about how to keep their children safe when in and around water.
Almost all toddler drownings are due to a lack of active adult supervision.
The Keep Watch program has four key drowning prevention actions:
Supervise - Always keep watch of your child around water Restrict - Restrict your child's access to water at all times Teach - Teach your child to be water confident Respond - Learn CPR and call Triple Zero (000) in an emergencyTogether, these safety measures can help to keep children safe around water.
