A Nasho's experience: national service in Australia

During this time, over 60,000 young men were conscripted by ballot under the National Service Scheme to serve in the Australian Army.Fewer will be aware that National Service was also in force from 1951—1959 following outbreak of the Korean War. Nearly 230,000 Australian men were called up for training in the Navy, Army, and Air Force … but never saw active service under this scheme.For many, National Service was an enriching and highly successful period of their lives in which they learnt discipline and the value of esprit-de-corps. Others paid the ultimate sacrifice, with 212 National Servicemen dying in Borneo and Vietnam during active service.Join us for a free talk with special guest and President of the National Servicemen’s Association of Queensland, Mr Alex Garlin, as he recalls his experience as a ‘Navy Nasho’ during the 1950’s and the lifelong comradeship that being a ‘Nasho’ forged.Attendees will also learn about The Nominal Roll, which enables National Servicemen to record their own details of service, and to look up the service details of others.After the talk, visitors can stay to explore the Memorial Galleries - embarking on a free interactive journey from World War I to today, before taking time to reflect on the remarkable stories of bravery and sacrifice in the tranquil parklands.Anzac Square Memorial Galleries is located at 285 Ann Street, Brisbane.
