Eighteen months ago Calamvale-based brothers Jaden and Ian Cao had only played table tennis socially.
Today, they are Queensland representatives in the sport after taking part in a KRANK School Holiday activity last year at South Brisbane Table Tennis in Logan Central.
Jaden, 11, said the fun activity motivated him to keep playing table tennis.
Ian, 10, said it was a great way to meet new people.
Both boys now take part in weekly training and regular competitions.
Jaden has his sights set on being selected in an Australian team next year. Ian is too young yet to try out.
South Brisbane Table Tennis will be looking for its next champion player during the upcoming KRANK School Holiday program featuring free and low-cost activities in the City of Logan in January.
Table tennis is among more than 110 active and creative activities available through KRANK for children and teens aged 5 to 17 years between Saturday, January 7 and Sunday, January 22.
Table tennis sessions for five to 11-year-olds are at South Brisbane Table Tennis from 2.30pm to 3.15pm on Saturday, January 7 and Saturday, January 14.
There will also be a session from 3.30pm to 4.15pm on Saturday, January 7 and Saturday, January 14 for those aged 12 to 17.
South Brisbane Table Tennis operator Giovanni Cnapich said the centre’s members range in age from four to 85.
“We are so proud of Ian and Jaden and many others who are tracking the same path,” Mr Cnapich said.
City Lifestyle Chair, Councillor Laurie Koranski, said Jaden and Ian’s achievements were a great success story from the KRANK program run by Logan City Council.
“The boys gave a fun activity a go and discovered an aptitude for it and have gone on to represent the state,” Cr Koranski said.
“I encourage all local students to take a look at the KRANK program and get involved these school holidays.
“You may not become a champion, but you might develop some extra skills or uncover a new activity you enjoy.”
Activities are always popular and those interested are encouraged to book early once the booking window opens.
Bookings open at 9am on Monday, December 12. No bookings can be accepted before this date.
