Party time for Containers for Change
City of Fremantle 8 Dec 2022

The City of Fremantle is getting into the holiday spirit by offering the free use of Containers for Change recycling bins for local parties during the festive season.

The City will arrange to drop off and pick up the bins to any residence within a 10 kilometre radius of the City of Fremantle Containers for Change refund point on Knutsford Street.

Fremantle Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge said the Containers for Change recycling bins offer a convenient way to earn some extra cash for the holidays, as well as ensuring eligible containers are diverted from landfill.

“The holidays are a great time to get together with family, friends and neighbours and celebrate the festive season,” Mayor Fitzhardinge said.

“These special recycling bins are suitable for all cans, bottles and cartons marked with the Containers for Change 10-cent refund logo.

“Each bin can hold around 250 containers, which equates to a $25 refund that can go back into your own pocket or be donated to a worthy charity.

“We’re offering this service not just to City of Fremantle residents but to anyone who lives within 10 kilometres of our Containers for Change refund point, which includes suburbs as far away as Swanborne and Claremont to the north, Coogee and Yangebup in the south and Bullcreek and Booragoon to the east.

“To order a bin, all people need to do is email us at [email protected] or call 0419 915 992 to let us know how many bins are required and the drop-off location.

“You’ll also need a to sign up for a Containers for Change member number so you can receive your refund via a direct deposit into your bank account. You can sign up for a member number on the City’s website at fremantle.wa.gov.au/containers-change.

“Then it’s just a matter of collecting the eligible containers, ensuring they’re empty and have the lids removed, sticking them in the bin, and we’ll come around to collect them the next weekday after the party.”

Containers for Change allows people to claim a 10-cent refund for every eligible beverage container they hand. Most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard containers between 150ml and 3L are eligible for a refund.

The City of Fremantle refund point at 83 Knutsford Street, just around the corner from the Fremantle Recycling Centre, is normally open six days a week, including 10am–4pm on Saturday and 12–4pm on Sunday.

Please note, during the festive season the refund point will be closed between 25–27 December and 1–2 January, but will be open for extra days on 21 December, 28 December and 4 January.
