The need for speed safety

The Queensland Government have introduced new rules regarding the use of personal mobility devices (PMD), such as e-scooters, e-skateboards, e-unicycles and e-boards.

‘These new regulations are designed to protect both the PMD user, and the general public,’ General Manager of Infrastructure & Utilities Jason Hoolihan said.

The new limits are as follows:

Footpaths — 12km/h maximumShared paths —12km/h maximum (unless signed otherwise)Separated paths—25km/h maximum (unless signed otherwise)Bicycle paths — 25km/h maximum (unless signed otherwise)Roads — 25km/h maximum

In addition to these limits, PMD users are required to wear an Australian standard approved bicycle helmet, and have it fastened.

‘Mobile phones must be mounted to your e-scooter, and can only be used for GPS functions. Any use of mobile phones in any other way while riding is illegal.’ Mr Hoolihan continued.

‘Fines are in place for breach of these new restrictions, starting at $143 for less than 14KM/h over the limit, up to over $1000 for illegal use of a mobile phone.’

‘While these devices are considered fun, they are motorised vehicles that use our roads, footpaths and bikepaths, and therefore need to abide by public safety expectations.’ he stated.
