Redevelopment of Riverside Theatres

Riverside Theatres has been the leading centre of arts and entertainment in Greater Sydney for the last 30 years, welcoming more than 180,000 patrons through its doors each year. The Council-owned-and-operated theatre is an integral part of the City of Parramatta’s cultural fabric, but has outgrown its original home.  

In May 2022, City of Parramatta Council confirmed its commitment to transform Riverside Theatres into the centrepiece of Parramatta’s revitalised arts and culture precinct, across the river from the new Powerhouse Parramatta. 

In December 2022, Council approved a detailed business case and project plan to realise this vision and begin work on the redevelopment of this world-class venue. 

The Riverside Theatres redevelopment project will deliver a modernised and expanded facility, doubling its capacity to meet the needs of the current and future population of the City of Parramatta and Greater Sydney.

What’s happening?

Whilst Council has approved the detailed business case and project plan for the redevelopment of the Riverside Theatres, a separate process is needed to ensure the necessary planning controls are implemented to allow for the redevelopment project for the Riverside Theatre to progress.  Council is inviting community feedback on a Planning Proposal (i.e. a document that explains proposed changes to the planning controls found in a Local Environmental Plan) for the Riverside Theatres site at 353A-353C Church Street and part of 351 Church Street, Parramatta.  The Planning Proposal is needed to implement the necessary height and building envelope controls needed for the new theatres.
