Maroondah has won a 2022 Victorian Award for Planning Excellence for our work with the Healthy Street Project.
Presented by the Planning Institute Australia, the project won the Stakeholder Engagement category, in recognition of our work with local community members and volunteers to undertake walkability assessments of the precincts surrounding Bedford Road Shopping Centre and McAdam Square Shopping Centre.
A number of volunteers of all ages and abilities were recruited as part of the project. They were provided with training on the Healthy Street Framework and how to undertake walkability assessments. They then walked throughout the precinct and worked with Council to identify any concerns or areas for improvement.
Mayor of Maroondah, Councillor Rob Steane, said the project will help shape the future of the shopping centre precincts.
“The Healthy Street Project is a great initiative. The walkability assessments have provided valuable insights that will be used to inform future works in the precincts around Bedford Road and McAdam Square shopping centres,” Cr Steane said.
“Thank you to all of the volunteers who took part in the project.”
As part of the judging, the project was commended for its approach to community capacity building, as our participants were empowered with the knowledge and tools needed to generate positive changes in their neighbourhoods.
