A traditional dance from the Punjab region of India and Pakistan has been added to the City of Logan’s popular Active and Healthy program.

To mark the start of 2023 a number of new activities for children and families, people with disability and culturally and linguistically diverse communities have been added.

A Punjabi Bhangra dance class is being offered under the program from 5pm to 6pm each Sunday at Springwood Road State School in Rochedale South.

The classes are run by Harry Singh, Aman Monga and Pardeep Singh from Rich Virsa Bhangra and Dance Academy.

Harry Singh said classes had been running in six locations across South East Queensland for the past five years.

“We teach from scratch,” he said.

“It is very colourful and good in terms of fitness. It creates a new world for people.”

Mr Monga said they had also performed at events, performances and cultural activations in the region, including the recent Woodford Folk Festival.

He said dance was a great way for people to connect with others and for many it was therapeutic.

City Lifestyle Chair, Councillor Laurie Koranski, encouraged the community to get involved in the updated Active and Healthy program for 2023.

“This program offers residents access to more than 100 free or low-cost physical activities, health and wellbeing programs and is a great way to meet your goals for the new year,” Cr Koranski said.

“It gives people the chance to sample a range of programs designed to improve their health and wellbeing and experience different cultural activities.”
