Council is aware of the increase in mosquito activity post the recent rains.
The most effective control of mosquitos is through larvicide treatments. Larvicide is a growth regulator that specifically targets mosquito breeding. It works by killing mosquito larvae before they can grow into adults. Importantly larvicide does not harm other insects or people.
Fogging is generally used as a last resort and seen only as a temporary solution. Fogging can kill beneficial insects and bees and may impact those with respiratory issues such as asthma.
Council has already carried out larvicide treatments at 18 locations across Emerald. We encourage you to lodge any hotspot areas by calling council on 1300 242 686 – as we continue to carry out treatments.
The following video is also helpful in understanding the treatment of mosquitos and why council will use larvicide in advance of any fogging.
