Council endorsed the Melbourne East Regional Sport and Recreation Strategy 2022-2032 in December 2022.
This updated strategy seeks to build on the foundation provided by the original strategy while acknowledging new trends and issues across the Melbourne East region. These include predicted population growth, communities that are ageing and becoming more diverse, and increases in informal activities and demand for flexible ways to participate in sport and recreational activities.
The strategy was reviewed in consultation with Victorian and regional sporting associations and research, with the aim of creating an updated strategy that will provide a snapshot of the current regional facilities and identify future priorities for Councils in the region.
Mayor of Maroondah, Councillor Rob Steane said the strategy will be important for regional projects.
“The updated strategy will assist Councils in the region to identify future priorities, including opportunities to advocate and secure funding for projects that benefit communities throughout the Melbourne East region.”
The original strategy was developed in 2016 in a partnership between seven eastern region Councils: Maroondah, Yarra Ranges, Manningham, Monash, Knox, Whitehorse and Boroondara. It established the region’s first coordinated and collaborative approach to sport and recreation planning.
