Wyndham City will welcome Australia’s U-20 female football team, the CommBank Young Matildas to Werribee this month, for their training camp at Galvin Park from 13 – 22 February.

As part of their visit, local football players aged 12-16 years will have the exciting opportunity to meet the CommBank Young Matildas following an open training session that will be held on 15 February.

Young players will be able to ask questions, take photos and learn what it takes to be play for Australia.

Also while in Melbourne this month, the CommBank Young Matildas will play matches against A-League Women competition leaders Western United and Melbourne City.

The 10-day training camp in Wyndham City will bring together a 28-player squad to prepare for next month’s Round 1 of the 2024 AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers.

The CommBank Young Matildas will take on Kyrgyz Republic, Guam and Iraq in the qualifiers and the winner will progress to Round 2 which will be played in June this year - the four Round 2 winners will earn a spot in the finals.

Wyndham City Council Mayor, Cr Susan McIntyre said: "It is an honour for our city to be able to support the growth and development of Australia's young female footballers as they work towards the AFC U-20 Women's Asian Cup.”

“We are delighted to provide the team with access to first-class training facilities and wish them the best of luck in their upcoming matches."

Wyndham City’s Active City portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard said attracting elite levels of football to Wyndham would no doubt help inspire local young footballers.

“It’s a big year for women’s football in Wyndham, with this visit from the CommBank Young Matildas, Western United’s inaugural Liberty A-League season and the added thrill of hosting Africa’s second best team, the Moroccan Women’s National Team, this winter for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™,” he said.

“I look forward to our young footballers taking heart and being inspired to play at the elite level if that’s their sporting dream.”
