Revival of Culture event - January 21, 2023
The newly formed Bilya Gogulyar Boodja Aboriginal Corporation, based in York, has been successful in its application for funding for an event to be delivered on or before Australia Day 2023.
The Shire of York applied for a grant of $10,000 from the Australia Day 2023 Community Grants Program, delivered through the National Australia Day Council, with the assistance of the Australian Government. Funding is to be used for events that encourage local and visiting attendees to engage with local Aboriginal people to promote reconciliation, demonstrate togetherness and empower the local Aboriginal community. The aim is to promote the integration of Aboriginal people and culture into the National Australia Day event.
The Bilya Gogulyar Boodja (BGB) Aboriginal Corporation, will host a free local Aboriginal arts and cultural event on Saturday 21 January 2023 based on the 2023 Australia Day theme REFLECT, RESPECT, CELEBRATE.
Located at the Sandalwood Yards, 179 Avon Terrace, the event will commence at 10am with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony. Arts & Crafts will be on display all day, and attendees will be able to participate in workshops in Toolmaking, Digeredoo, Painting and Messagestones. A free lunch of kangeroo and damper is available with yarning and storytelling by local Elders.
The aim of this event is to encourage local and visiting attendees to engage with local Aboriginal people to promote reconciliation, demonstrate togetherness and empower the local Aboriginal community.

10.00 am OPENING CEREMONY
Local elder Dennis Kickett will perform a smoking ceremony, welcome to country speech and a performance by the local children’s choir Noongar Koolangars.
10.30 am REFLECT, RESPECT, CELEBRATE GROUP ART EXHIBITION OPENING Arts and crafts on display will be provided by visual artists Dennis Kickett, Michelle Kickett, Kallon Kickett, Serena Narkle, Amber Holland, Julie Holland, Daroo, Marge, Cleve Narkle, Travis Narkle.
10.30 am – 3.00 pm ARTS AND CRAFTS MARKET STALLS AND ARTS AND CRAFT WORKSHOPS
The main attraction of the event will involve a series of art and crafts market stalls and workshops including painting, toolmaking, didgeridoo making, jewellery making and message stone painting.

TOOMAKING WORKSHOP
Facilitator: Cleve Narkle
This workshop will be facilitated by local Noongar elder demonstrating and assisting workshop participants to craft ceremonial and hunting tools which include dowaks-clubs, clapping sticks, digging sticks and walking sticks. The materials will be sourced locally from York and surrounding areas for the crafting of the tools on the day.
DIDGERIDOO WORKSHOP
Facilitator: Daroo and Travis Narkle
This workshop will be facilitated by local Aboriginal didgeridoo crafters and players who will offer workshop participants an opportunity to paint a didgeridoo using traditional painting techniques and symbols as well as provide tips on how to play this ancient instrument. The materials will be sourced locally from York and the surrounding areas for the crafting of the tools on the day.
MESSAGESTONE WORKSHOP:
Facilitator: Kallon Kickett
This workshop will offer attendees an opportunity to paint a message stone using traditional Aboriginal symbols and techniques based on this year’s theme. There will also be an explanation of the Aboriginal symbols on hand which can be used to reflect the 2023 Survival Day theme.
12.00 – 1.30 pm FREE KANGAROO STEW AND DAMPER LUNCH
Caterers: Wendy Narkle, Serena Narkle Sandra Narkle
From 12 noon onward local Noongar women elders will provide a free lunch which consists of kangaroo stew and damper.
2.00 – 3.00 pm STORYTELLING BY LOCAL ELDERS
Elders: Alan Jones, Meryl Jones & Meryl Narkle
After lunch local elders will host a yarning session to tell stories about the local area and share personal experiences. This session will be hosted by local elders Dennis Kickett, Cleve Narkle, Alan Jones, and Sandra Narkle.
