Gannawarra Aquatic Strategy adopted

Published on 16 February 2023

The future of aquatics in the Gannawarra will be guided by a new document developed following more than two years of engagement with the community.

Adopted at the February 2023 Council Meeting, the Gannawarra Aquatic Strategy outlines an innovative approach to the delivery of aquatics within the Gannawarra. The Strategy focuses on modern and contemporary use rather than focusing on a model of service that was established when the outdoor facilities were built over 60 years ago.

“Council thanks all who took the time to have their say regarding the future of aquatics in the Gannawarra, with your feedback assisting with the development of this important document,” Mayor Charlie Gillingham said.

“Proactive discussions with pool management committees, Progress Associations/Development Committees, schools and advisory groups, health agencies and residents, as well as feedback received via multiple surveys, highlighted the passion throughout the community for their local outdoor swimming pools.

“Discussions and feedback received also highlighted the importance our residents place on our aquatic facilities, as well as the growing demand for all year round warm water exercise to support learn to swim programs and community health and wellbeing.”

Following an extensive community engagement period held last year, key recommendations include:

Continuing to support the community operating the Koondrook, Leitchville and Quambatook swimming pools; Altering the proposed “lagoon style” pool in Cohuna to develop a seasonal lap pool that supports current and future users; and Developing a new warm water exercise facility in Kerang incorporated with the Sir John Gorton Library.

“The engagement period identified broad support for addressing the significant unmet demand for a warm water program pool with a proposed integrated aquatic facility in Kerang as part of the Sir John Gorton Library and the development of a new seasonal outdoor pool in Cohuna,” Mayor Gillingham said.

“Now that this important strategy has been adopted, Council staff can begin developing plans and costings for new infrastructure outlined in the document, which would form part of future Council advocacy to both State and Federal Governments to secure funding for these major projects.”
