The green waste area at the Emerald Glasson Street waste facility remains closed whilst council waits for a decision from the Department of Environment and Science.
Council has lodged an application with the Department of Environment and Science to gain permission to increase the tonnage that can be accepted at the rear of the Emerald Waste Transfer Station. The Department believes that council has exceeded the allowable annual volumes. Therefore, an application to increase the tonnage is required. This application was submitted in December and is currently under assessment.
‘We understand it has been difficult for the community to deal with their excess green waste and we are working closely with the Department to have this part of the facility reopened as soon as possible,’ said General Manager Communities John McDougall.
To support the community during this period council is hosting a pop-up green waste collection point for the next two Sundays.
Starting on Sunday 19 February and again on Sunday 26 February from 7.00 am to 12.00 pm residents can bring their ute full of green waste to the corner of Rifle Range Road and Campbell Ford Drive, near the standpipe. Council staff will help residents unload their utes and load the green waste onto a garbage truck.
Please note, council will only take domestic green waste at this collection point, and all commercial green waste must be dropped as per current process to Lochlees landfill.
‘The closure of the green waste area at the Emerald Glasson Street waste facility has been a frustrating situation all around,’ he continued.
‘Council is prepared to host more of these pop-up locations until a resolution with the waste facility is made,’ Mr McDougall said.
