The City of Sydney is welcoming riders onto a rebuilt cycleway on College Street providing another key connection in its expanding network of active transport options.
The 650-metre two-way separated cycleway connects riders from Oxford Street to Queen’s Square in the north, which flows onto recently built cycleways on King and Pitt streets. The City of Sydney will begin construction of the Oxford Street cycleway between the city centre and Taylor Square in mid-2023.
“Before it was removed, the College Street cycleway was one of the city’s most popular routes, with over 2,000 cyclists riding it each day. We’re so thrilled this vital piece of infrastructure is once again providing a good quality active transport option for people who ride in and around our great city,” Clover Moore, Lord Mayor of Sydney said.
“College Street is a key link for riders from the eastern suburbs and when we complete the Oxford Street West cycleway next year there will be even more safe options for people to ride to and from the city.
“Having a better connected network of cycleways is great for our city because it gives people another safe transport option. Active commuting can help improve health while freeing up space on our roads and public transport, and creating separated bike lanes means fewer people riding on pedestrian footpaths.”
The City of Sydney works closely with Transport for NSW to improve active transport across our area, with the $4 million cost of building the College Street cycleway fully funded by the state government.
The City of Sydney will shortly open another two cycleway projects for people riding on Ashmore and Harley streets as well as on Henderson Road, Railway Parade and Bridge Street in Erskineville.
In 2023 the City of Sydney will begin constructing separated cycleways on Oxford, Liverpool and Castlereagh streets. This will add to an ever-expanding network which saw an additional 2 kilometres of safe cycleways constructed in 2022 bringing the total network in our area to 22 kilometres.
