Wyndham Libraries hosted a successful Junior Chess Tournament on 19 January at the Point Cook Library.
The tournament featured 31 participants aged between 8 and 13, who showcased their chess skills and mastery against one another.
Wyndham City Learning City portfolio holder Cr Jasmine Hill said: “It was wonderful to watch the participants test their chess techniques against each other and build up their forte of moves.”
Wyndham City Libraries is delighted to announce 11 year-old Agasthya as the Junior Chess Champion.
Agasthya, a Manor Lakes local, has been playing chess since he was five and enjoys the challenge of playing chess and the problem-solving skills that develop when under pressure.
Runners-up were 10 year-olds Ilyas and Shrevin.
“I’m pleased we’ve been able to run the competition face-to-face for the first time since 2019. Young people will also have an opportunity to compete in the Teen Chess Simul later this year,” Cr Hill said.
“Wyndham City Council is committed to providing life-long learning opportunities for young people in our community that encourage and foster skill development such as the Junior Chess tournament,” Cr Hill added.
Point Cook Library runs All Ages Chess during the school term on Tuesdays between 4pm and 5pm for beginners and experienced players. Come and enjoy a game with your friends or family and meet other Chess enthusiasts. Chess Club Volunteers are available to help with basic rules, strategies and to referee games.
