Expressions of interest are now open for the City of Rockingham’s 2023 Youth Sport Leadership Program, with local sporting clubs encouraged to apply.
The program, which is the first of its kind at a grassroots level in Western Australia, aims to support young people aged 12 – 15 years in leadership roles at their local sporting clubs.
It focuses on building young role models within the community by improving communication skills, enhancing their problem solving abilities, boosting leadership qualities and increasing confidence.
Activities for young people who participate will focus on teamwork, clear communication, learning from past experiences and the importance of allowing others to have their say.
City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin said consultation with local sporting clubs had been integral to the development of the program.
“In the early stages of this program a lack of leadership opportunities for young people in sport were identified during the City’s consultation with sporting clubs,” Mayor Hamblin said.
The City has worked closely with local coaches, athletes and administrators to design a program that will provide young people with skills and knowledge that will spur their growth as young leaders, both at their clubs and in everyday life.”A key focus area in the City’s Health and Wellbeing Strategy is to support the delivery of inclusive sport, recreation, and physical activity programs that are targeted at groups such as young people.
“The City is now accepting EOIs for the next round of the program, which will begin in May 2023, and all sporting clubs are strongly encouraged to take up this exciting opportunity.”
