Byron Shire Mayor, Michael Lyon, marked the one-year anniversary of the 2022 floods with a reflection and acknowledgement during today’s Council meeting and an invitation for the community to attend a series of Flood Anniversary events and to bring people together in support of each other.
“It’s important to mark this date and time to acknowledge the impact this natural disaster has had on our whole community, " Mayor Lyon said.
“Since the flooding first started on Tuesday 28 February last year, we’ve been in a process of recovery.
“Many members of our community are still dealing with the reality of the impacts of this disaster on their lives,” the Mayor said.
Council, in collaboration with community service organisations, is coordinating a series of Flood Anniversary events happening over coming weeks and months thanks to funding from the NSW Government.
“There will be more events organised in our villages and towns across the year in accordance with how our communities wish to acknowledge the floods in a way that is meaningful to them,” the Mayor said.
