Short periods of heavy rain overloading Byron Shire drains

Published on 25 February 2023

Byron Shire Council staff are responding to customer enquiries and concerns about flooded drains after heavy rainfall this morning (Friday 24 February).

Information from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM)shows that more than 100mm fell on parts of the Shire in the six hours from 6am to midday.

In the BOM’s Three Hour Rainfall Bulletin issued just after 12 noon, the following rainfall figures were published:

Mullumbimby Creek – 75mm (6am – midday) Middle Pocket – 99mm (6am – midday) Myocum – 101mm Byron Bay (Belongil Creek) – 103mm (6am – midday) Yelgun – 111mm (6am – midday)

Council is asking people to report their flooded drains via the Report It tab on Council’s website and if possible, upload photos.

Staff will be investigating the problems with drainage, mindful that this was a major concern for many residents after the floods last year.
