Central Highlands Regional Council’s second quarter report (found in the unconfirmed minutes of the 22 February 2023 council meeting) is out, which highlights council’s role in regional and rural areas. The report addresses how council is helping make communities that are safe, with access to services and infrastructure that are needed.

‘We are proud to progress much-needed roads, utilities, parks and infrastructure projects and provide reliable essential utilities and services to our community,’ said CEO Sharon Houlihan.

‘Recruitment of committed and experienced professionals who live within the region and improving the performance of council’s many assets remain a priority and are progressing well.

‘We have seen steady progress towards achieving our operational improvement initiatives with 89% of activities in this year’s plan already completed or on target for completion,’ Houlihan continued.

Highlighted projects nearing completion include private mobile radio network and flood warning network improvement projects to improve remote communications during disasters, paving and sealing of Glenlee Road and construction of new spelling yards at the Emerald sale yards.

One of the most successful events of this quarter was the Gemfields Planning Study Community Open Day which saw nearly 400 community members attend and share their thoughts and questions on changes, challenges and opportunities for the unique Gemfields region.

‘After a two-year hiatus due to pandemic and weather events, we welcomed back Nogoa November,’ Ms Houlihan said.

‘Nogoa November is an important family event that honours our mighty river system and encourages community connections and relationship with council,’ she continued.

The CEO said the report marked the halfway point of the council’s capital works delivery plan.

‘As well as delivering our annual programs and projects, we are also staying on track to achieve our long-term destination goals outlined in council’s corporate plan.’
