Mayor of Albany Dennis Wellington has announced that he will not contest his seat as Mayor of Albany or as a Councillor at this year’s Local Government Elections.
Having held the position of Mayor of Albany since 2011, Mayor Wellington has made the difficult and emotional decision to retire at the 2023 Council election in October.
Mayor Wellington has served on the Council for the City of Albany for 23 years, including the past 12 years as Mayor where his commitment to the Albany community has been demonstrated through his leadership and achievements.
He has a unique ability to understand the priorities of those living and working in Albany, empowering them to have a voice and find local solutions that shape Albany into a thriving regional city.
Mayor Wellington has led Albany through the Anzac Centenary commemorations, delivery of the redevelopment of the Centennial Park sporting precinct, major upgrades and development at Middleton Beach, repurposing of the Albany Town Hall and the list goes on.
He has been a strong and passionate advocate for the Albany Ring Road, National Anzac Centre, Albany Waterfront, regional education, renewable energy, and sustainable waste management to name a few, as well as leading from the front through crises like the 2018 May bushfires and recent Covid-19 pandemic.
Mayor Wellington has been the heart and soul of Albany but said the time had come for him to reflect and spend more time with family and friends.
“I am honoured to have served as the Mayor of Albany for the past 12 years, to work for the betterment of our community and bring projects to life that will support our city to continue to thrive and grow,” he said.
“It has been an incredibly rewarding journey and I’m very proud of what our Council and staff have achieved and the support they’ve shown me.
“It’s an incredibly difficult decision I’ve reached, but the time is right to pass the baton to someone else to continue the job. Our future is very exciting, especially with the Albany Bicentenary on the horizon in 2026.
“Council is full of passion and energy for the future of Albany which fills me with confidence. I have children, grandchildren, a partner and more grandchildren on the way, so my time and energy will now refocus to them.”
