New youth space to open amid autumn event extravaganza

The shire’s events calendar is continuing to offer up something for all ages throughout autumn, including another safe outlet for young people to socialise in Kyneton.

Starting on 26 April and operating from 4-5:30pm every second Wednesday, Council’s Youth Services team will host a new youth space called Wednesday Knights at the portable behind Council’s Kyneton office.

The free, supervised sessions will be open to secondary school-aged children, with food provided and games such as Dungeons and Dragons and Magic the Gathering.

Mayor Annette Death said the need for additional youth spaces was the most common theme identified in discussions between Council and young people used to inform the Youth Services 10-year youth strategy, Elevate.

“It’s important that we keep young people engaged through a range of initiatives, like this new youth space in Kyneton,” she said.

“I encourage people to visit Council’s website for more diverse, inclusive youth activities to come throughout autumn and beyond.”

The new Kyneton youth space complements an existing youth space in Woodend and was chosen to be accessible to more young people in the shire, in replacing an outgoing youth space in Newham.

Meanwhile, there are plenty of opportunities for people to stay local and enjoy some quality entertainment over the coming months including signature performances, more youth activities and school holiday events such as Fungi Town.

The Fungi Town caravan is an art installation on wheels that has been touring through the Macedon Ranges led by artist Kathy Holowko, who will visit Kyneton Town Hall on Wednesday 12 April and the Romsey Hub on Thursday 13 April. Bookings are essential for the two-hour workshops on both days.

Other upcoming youth activities include an open mic night on Thursday 30 March from 5-7pm and an open-air cinema night on Friday 28 April from 4:30pm, both at the Romsey Ecotherapy Park.

These activities feature alongside Kyneton Town Hall’s ongoing 2023 program, of which upcoming shows include the Multicultural Comedy Gala (25 March), the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow (28 April) and musician Diesel (30 April).
