Gannawarra Shire Council’s commitment to long-term climate adaptation and mitigation will be guided by a new strategy adopted at the March 2023 Council Meeting.
Developed in partnership with industry consultants, community representatives and Councillors, the Gannawarra Shire Council Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Strategy outlines actions and set goals to assist Council achieving its goal of being a highly sustainable and resilient regional Council and a leading region for renewable energy and low carbon technology by 2040.
“Council’s Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Strategy builds on our Climate Change Policy, which commits Council to transition to 100 per cent renewable energy and corporate net zero emissions by 2025, and net zero emissions at Council-managed landfills by 2040,” Mayor Charlie Gillingham said.
“The strategy outlines 36 long-term, medium-term and short-term goals across four strategic priorities that will enable Council to adapt to climate change, build our resilience, minimise our environmental impact and position the Shire to act on available opportunities.”
Residents were able to provide feedback during a community engagement period held in December 2022, with feedback incorporated into the final version of the document.
“Council thanks all residents who took the time to view the draft version of the document and looks forward to working with the community to achieving the actions outlined in the strategy,” Mayor Gillingham said.
