The City of Hobart’s Youth Arts and Recreation Centre (Youth ARC) is seeking dozens of young artists to light up Hobart.
Light Up the Lane is Hobart’s premiere digital youth arts festival.
The event sees artworks projected onto buildings, fences, windows, doors, and footpaths, transforming the urban landscape into an exciting pop-up digital art gallery.
Young people between the ages of 12-25 are invited to submit their digital artwork, illustrations, paintings, photography and video for consideration.
Welcoming and Inclusive City Chair Cr Dr Zelinda Sherlock said the event was an opportunity to celebrate the skill, passion and creativity of young people.
“Young people have unique perspectives and it’s important that we provide them with the platforms to contribute and be seen,” Cr Dr Zelinda said.
“This is an incredible opportunity for emerging artists to showcase their talent and connect with a broader audience.”
Musician and photographer Jake Seabourne - pictured left with fellow artists Taly Hamilton (middle) and Gwen Lee (right) - has participated in Light Up the Lane for a number of years and says the event just keep getting better and better.
“I truly believe that young people deserve every opportunity to shine, and Light Up the Lane is a perfect time for it,” Mr Seabourne said.
“Showcasing fantastic displays of digital media at breathtaking scale in the darkness of night projected onto the State Library.”
Former Light Up the Lane participant and K-Pop dancer Gwen Lee said it was a great experience for young artists.
“There's always a huge flow of people coming to view and experience the art, which provides a lot of exposure for budding artists,” Ms Lee said.
Light Up the Lane is an all ages, drug and alcohol-free festival. It will take over Mather’s Lane and surrounding laneways on Friday 5 May 2023.
As well as art projection it features live music, dance performances and interactive activities for everyone to join.
Artwork submissions close 5pm Friday 14 April. For more information, visit LIGHT UP THE LANE ART SUBMISSION FORM 2023 (openforms.com)
