School holiday art workshops for Corangamite Shire youth

Young people will have an opportunity to express themselves through a series of innovative school holiday workshops in Cobden and Terang.

Three free workshops, under the guidance of Cobden artist Chelsea Hatherall, are being facilitated by Corangamite Shire.

Corangamite Shire Youth Engagement Coordinator Taylor Bonin said two Find Your Flow workshops aimed to encourage participants to create artworks with watercolours and inks in a mindful way. “There will be an opportunity for young people’s artworks to be photographed and turned into postcards if they are interested,” Taylor said.

Chelsea, a recipient of Victoria University’s Young Achiever of the Year award, said the workshops would explore the daunting task of beginning with a blank piece of paper.

“How do we get out of our own head, get out of the way and start thinking with the creative side of the brain instead of the analytical/critical,” she said.

“Using inks and watercolours for a base and finishing with linework, this workshop is a great activity to learn if you wish to be more creative.”

The workshops will be open for anyone aged between 12 and 25. The first will be from 11 am-2 pm on Wednesday 12 April at Alderwood Manor, 56 Curdie Street, Cobden.

The second workshop will be from 11 am-2 pm on Tuesday 18 April at the Old Courthouse, 55 High Street, Terang. Both workshops are funded by the State Government’s Engage! Program.

A third workshop, funded by FReeZA and called `Paint with Your Mate’, is open to 12 to 18-year-olds. It will be held from 11 am-1 pm on Friday 21 April at Alderwood Manor.

Lunch will be provided. Limited spots of 15 are available. Paint with your mate is for those wanting to give painting a go with the emotional support of friends.

“A relaxed session that isn’t focused on creating a perfect artwork, but in exploring trying a new skill while socialising with friends,” Chelsea explained.

You can also bring along a guitar, fiddle or mandolin to the free Martha Spencer Workshop at Terang Art Space, 73 High Street, Terang 3.30-5 pm, Thursday 6 April.
