Federation Council puts a spin on Youth Week

To embody this years’ Youth Week theme of ‘Connect. Participate. Celebrate.’ Federation Council will be hosting several free roller-skating events across the region.

A Beginner Skate Workshop suitable for ages five to adult will assist inexperienced skaters with basic skills such as learning how to stop, travel forward and safely fall.

Skaters will then be encouraged to wear their favourite disco attire and show off their newfound skills on the Roller Disco dancefloor. Participants can bring in their own skates or use the free rental skates available at each event.

Youth with sensory sensitivities or other hidden disabilities such as autism will be able to explore skating without the music, special effects and flashing lights of the Roller Disco through a dedicated Sensory Friendly Skate Session.

Federation Council Mayor, Cr Pat Bourke said, I hope that these events will be an exciting way for youth to get together and learn a new skill.

“The nearest roller-skating service providers and rinks can be over an hour away by car for young people living in Federation Council area and the costs can add up for families to participate in the sport,” he said.

“We hope that by bringing this unique and fun recreational activity to our region, it will remove barriers young people may face to try out a new experience.”

The roller-skating events are being held on Sunday 16 April from 1pm at the Urana Soldiers Memorial Hall and on Saturday 22nd April from 1pm at the Corowa Memorial Hall.

There are limited places available for the Beginner Skate Workshops. Reservations for each session can be made via the Federation Council website.
