Free food handling, barista course for Shire’s youth

Published on 05 April 2023

A free two-day barista course coming up in Timboon aims to open the door to hospitality careers for Corangamite Shire’s youth.

The accredited barista and safe food handling training workshops are designed to equip young people with the skills needed to make their way to a career in hospitality.

Corangamite’s younger people have been invited to learn the essential skills needed to make great coffee and safely prepare food in this fully subsidised training, provided by Short Courses Australia.

Corangamite Shire’s Youth Engagement Coordinator Taylor Bonin said the two-day training would provide a hands-on opportunity to gain a nationally accredited qualification and add experience to their resume.

“We invite all those interested in coffee, food preparation or both to come along and try their hand at brewing some new skills in their learning journey,” Mr Bonin said.

“We understand there is a need for accredited qualifications when young people are looking for employment, so if we can assist them in their journey, it is a win-win for Corangamite youth and local businesses.

“Life’s too short for bad coffee, so why not learn a niche skill of being a fully-fledged barista?”

The program is funded through Engage! a Victorian State Government program which aims to upskill young people in Victoria.

Participants will gain two qualifications in this course including Use Hygienic Practices for Food Safety (SITXFSA005) and Prepare and Serve Espresso Coffee (SITHFAB025).

Participants need to ensure they can attend both days at Timboon and District Public Hall on Wednesday 19 April and Thursday 20 April from 9am to 4pm. If transport is a barrier, please make note and efforts will be made to accommodate those in need.

Bookings are essential and priority will be given to people aged 16 to 25 years. Bookings: bit.ly/40Cnuhj
