Commemorating ANZAC Day
The Charters Towers community will join with the rest of Australia to commemorate ANZAC Day on Tuesday, 25 April 2023.
Commemorations commence at 5:50am with a Dawn Service to be held at the War Memorial Cemetery located to the north of Charters Towers on the Lynd Highway. The March will start at 9am from Mosman Street and end at the Gill Street Cenotaph for the Commemoration Ceremony.
Mayor Frank Beveridge is encouraging individuals and families to line the march route to acknowledge the marchers as they pass by.
“There will be ample assembly space in designated areas surrounding the Cenotaph and there will be an opportunity for members of the public to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph at the appropriate time during the service.
“If you are intending to lay a wreath at the commemoration ceremony, please contact Council by emailing [email protected]. There will be designated areas for wreath layers so your emailed advice will assist the organisers,” says Mayor Frank Beveridge.
Council wishes to remind the public to be mindful that Gill Street between Mosman Street and Boundary Street will be closed off to all traffic from 6am, any cars that may be parked within these closed areas will not be able to be moved until well after the event.
The ceremony areas at the Cemetery and Cenotaph in Gill Street are not undercover, those attending the service at either location are advised to eat a light meal prior to attending, bring a hat, and a water bottle.
