Castaways Curator and Schools Facilitator Selected for 2023
City of Rockingham 12 Apr 2023

Lyn Di Ciero is a visual arts writer, curator and filmmaker who has curated Castaways since it began in 2008. She has an extensive arts background, having established the Artist’s Chronicle in 1991, the longest running independent visual arts magazine in WA. Di Ciero is also a former Visual Arts Feature Writer for The West Australian and was the Australian Manager for the School of Colour in the 1990s.

For a decade Lyn has also explored filmmaking with her filmography including commissions from the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the City of Rockingham and St John of God Health Care.

Jacq Chorlton is a local artist working predominately in the medium of clay. She works part-time both as a professional artist with an online ceramic business and as a visual arts technician at a secondary school in Rockingham. She has been involved in many art projects and exhibitions over the years, and has been involved in Castaways since 2009.

She has entered large scale works winning two major awards and in 2010 won the People’s Choice Award. Jacq has been involved in every aspect of the school’s component of Castaways, from early sculpture workshops, to working with students on their pieces, to now facilitating the school program.

Mayor Deb Hamblin said the City was delighted to have Lyn Di Ciero and Jacq Chortlon involved for Castaways 2023.

“Castaways is the City’s signature arts and culture event, and we are pleased to have Lyn and Jacq involved in this fabulous event once again.

Both Lyn and Jacq have contributed extensively to Castaways over the years, and their skills and expertise will ensure that visitors to the exhibition are able to enjoy an array of sculptures that celebrate environmental awareness through artistic innovation.

Lyn Di Ciero said curating Castaways is a highlight of her year. “I thoroughly enjoy working with the City Rockingham in the lead up to Castaways. I find the City progressive and eager to strive for the very best, and working in tandem with Jacq Chorlton, with such wide experience of Castaways, is an incredible boon, but it is the ‘magic’ day when sculptural works are installed we all work collaboratively towards throughout the year.

"It’s when the innovative artistic vision of artists comes to life in one magical exhibition, spread from Rockingham Arts Centre to the Foreshore, bringing new thoughts for audiences to ponder, aesthetic skill and beauty to wonder at, and often comical interpretations to chuckle at.”

Entries are now open for Castaways 2023, and close at midnight on 28 May.
