Wyndham City’s parks and open spaces attract more visitors and families when public toilets are available, supporting community wellbeing.
The Wyndham Draft Public Toilet Policy provides a framework for toilet provision across the City’s open space and public realm network and is now open for consultation. Community feedback is invited on the direction of the policy and the location of proposed public toilets in open spaces.
The Policy promotes a standard for design that is accessible to all and facilitates the efficient provision of toilets in key open spaces that are well used by the community.
It recommends co-locating toilets within sporting pavilions and key destinations where the community gather, it also seeks to position them in locations that maximise safety.
The Policy recognises the importance of public toilets being designed, constructed and upgraded over time to meet or exceed the most current Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) standards.
Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Susan McIntyre said the vision for the Draft Public Toilet Policy included placing toilets at key destinations.
“We want those who use our wonderful open spaces to have clean, safe, and accessible public toilets,” she said.
“We often receive enquiries from the community about whether we can install a public toilet in their preferred park or reserve.”
“This policy outlines the decision making of where toilets should be located – this is most often at District level parks that attract substantial numbers of community members, it takes into consideration the cost of installation and continued maintenance over the years.”
“I encourage the community to look through the Draft Public Toilet Policy and provide their feedback.”
