A new vibrant mural by local talent Sam Bloor has transformed Point Street car park into a more appealing and inviting space.
The old Westgate car park was revived after sitting vacant for 10 years when the City partnered with Sirona Urban to reopen the lot which sits in the heart of Freo.
The car park reopened in March and included an additional 80 undercover car bays, new signage to help with easy way finding, more lighting, CCTV, and ACROD Bays.
Sirona Urban recently commissioned Sam to add some much-needed life to the Point Street car park with his design concept capturing the essence of Fremantle.
The mural is painted on a large feature wall at the front of the parking lot; a prime location sure to draw attention to a once neglected space which so many locals and visitors walk past every day.
The fluorescent yellow, black and pink shades are true to the existing colour palette used on the carpark’s exterior, which is the previous work of Alex Tandy. Sam incorporated the colours to keep elements of its history while refreshing faded and damaged parts of the art, drawing on the idea of ‘bringing the old back to life’.
The concept behind this mural signifies the changing future of 8 Point St, drawing on local icons and bringing a positive star to this corner of town.
Some of the references made are to the ships (positive star), Saint Patrick’s Basilica church which is opposite the carpark (open for prayer), the golden sun that beams across the carpark in the afternoon (sun daze) and it’s soon to be developed future (home stretch and begin again) all perfectly placed in the apartment like grid of the artwork.
Sam is no stranger to Fremantle, his artwork has been displayed across various locations in the past, such as the Old Customs House, Entry Bridge, Pakenham Street Art Space, Fremantle Art Centre, Fremantle public library, WA Maritime Museum and the Rottnest Ferry Terminal.
The next time you’re in Freo, come check out his work of art—and better yet, secure parking in a prime location!
