Work to transform the Victoria Street section of Kerang’s central business district will begin on Monday, 1 May.
The work, which forms part of the Kerang CBD Redevelopment – Stage 3, will involve the revitalisation of this popular retail area, building on work previously undertaken to improve the town’s central business district.
“The start of works is a key milestone for the overall Kerang CBD Redevelopment, which has previously involved improvements along Scoresby Street and the award-winning Victoria Square improvements,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.
“Once completed, the Kerang CBD will feature a modern look that will benefit residents and visitors alike.”
Key features of the $2.31 million project, fully funded by the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, include:
Replacing existing paved surfaces along Victoria Street to tie this area in with recently completed improvements along Scoresby Street; The remodelling of kerbing along the eastern section of Victoria Street between Scoresby Street and Victoria Square. These works, which will reduce the footpath’s steep variant, will provide easier access for shoppers accessing businesses along this section of road; Installing new street furniture and trees; Creating new outdoor dining areas for hospitality businesses; and The retention of rose bushes around the Karlie McDonald Memorial Clock at the intersection of Wellington and Victoria streets, with improved lighting to enhance this iconic memorial. As part of these improvements, pedestrian access around work sites will be diverted, with car parking spaces to be reduced.
“It is anticipated these works will be completed by the start of December, which will cater for the traditional influx of people to Kerang during the Christmas and New Year period,” Mr Rollinson said.
“Council thanks residents, business owners and visitors for their patience as these works occur.”
