The much-anticipated Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre (AARC) project is a step closer following progression of the land acquisition and announcement of successful tenders at this month’s City of Wanneroo Council meeting.

Council progressed the land acquisition for AARC, appointed Donovan Payne Architects to deliver the project’s detailed design and selected two businesses to carry out cost planner services on the project.

In line with the City’s commitment to sustainability, a geothermal heating system for the facility is being explored as an environmentally friendly energy source that can help offset carbon emissions.

The facility is set to feature indoor and outdoor swimming pools, gym and fitness facilities, sports courts, a crèche, café, change rooms and a car park.

Mayor Linda Aitken said the AARC project had received an outpouring of community support from northern suburbs residents, and she was excited to see the project progress.

“It was fantastic to see our community come together and advocate for this much-needed facility,” she said.

“I look forward to the detailed designs being developed over the next 12 months.”

To deliver the facility, the Federal Government has committed $30 million, the State Government $10 million in funding as well as a portion of land, together with a $10.6 million contribution through the Alkimos-Eglinton Developer Contribution Plan.

Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman said he was pleased the project was progressing.

“I’m pleased to see the project taking shape and look forward to seeing it completed,” he said.

Federal Member for Pearce Tracey Roberts said the AARC project was a highly anticipated facillity in our large and fast growing community.

“I have been a strong advocate for many years for the much-needed aquatic centre in Alkimos,” she said.

State Member for Butler John Quigley said almost 10,000 local school students will benefit from the Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre when it opens.

“I look forward to the City of Wanneroo, as project managers, delivering this important community facility in a timely manner,” he said.
