Let’s get composting, Maroondah! International Compost Awareness Week

This is a week of activities and events across Australia to raise awareness of the importance of composting and how compost is used to help build healthier soils. 

Mayor of Maroondah, Councillor Rob Steane, encouraged residents to get involved.

“International Compost Awareness Week is a great way to learn about the numerous benefits of composting - for you and your garden,” Cr Steane said.

“You can also take part in upcoming events and workshops to help you get started with composting at home.”

The benefits of composting

Composting has many benefits for you and your garden all year round, such as:

creating a rich fertiliser for your garden improving the yield of your home-grown fruit and vegetables  adding important minerals, nutrients, bacteria and micro-organisms back into your soil increasing the water retention of your soil getting you out in the garden more. Council is hosting two free events in May so you can learn more about the different systems available for composting your food and garden waste at home.

Introduction to Composting, Worm Farms and Bokashi bins

This is an introductory session where you can learn about these three home composting systems. The session will cover how to set up and maintain each system and help you choose which system is best for you.

Date: Monday 1 May Time: 1pm to 2.30pm Location: Realm Library, Level 2 Realm, Ringwood Compost, Worm Farm and Bokashi workshop

This session will be presented by Cultivating community and will cover the differences between 'hot' and 'cold' composting, troubleshooting tips for each system and what the differences between these three systems are and how they can each benefit your garden.
