Compostable kitchen caddy liners arrive

Corangamite Shire householders have been given added support to help maintain their reputation as leaders in waste separation.

Householders who pay for kerbside collection have received a new roll of kitchen caddy liners to encourage increased recycling of organic kitchen waste.

Mayor Ruth Gstrein said Corangamite Shire residents had been using their Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bin for many years and increasing the diversion of food scraps in their homes and businesses from landfill.

“It is important to continue to separate organic waste such as food scraps and garden vegetation as they generate a larger amount of methane if left to decompose in landfill,” Cr Gstrein said.

“Even if you have a compost bin at home you can use the kitchen caddy and liners for food that cannot be home composted such as citrus, onion, meat, dairy, takeaway foods and leftovers.

“To help you to continue to use the kitchen caddies and divert all your food scraps, Council has supplied a roll of 150 compostable liners which will last for six to 12 months depending on your use.”

If you run out of compostable liners before your next allocation arrives, you can make your own out of old newspaper or use a paper napkin or serviette which will help prevent food sticking to your kitchen caddy. Alternatively, you can buy more compostable liners for a small fee at the Civic Centre Camperdown or at your local transfer station.

The delivery was performed by local community groups volunteering their time to raise funds for local events and causes.
