Wyndham Community Centres are joining to celebrate Neighbourhood House Week from Monday, 8 May, to Sunday, 14 May.
Yoga, tai chi, woodworking, cake making, gardening, and painting are just a few of the classes and workshops on offer to residents throughout the week.
Neighbourhood House Week is an annual national celebration recognising the vital role of neighbourhood houses and community centres in promoting community wellbeing and connection.
Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Susan McIntyre, said: “Last year, more than 31,000 activities and programs were hosted at Community Centres across Wyndham, and 442 community groups ran activities every month.”
“These programs help our residents stay connected, active, learn new skills for work or enjoyment and get support.”
“At a time when people are struggling with an increased cost of living, it’s excellent that our Community Centres can be a safety net for people in strife,” said Mayor McIntyre.
This year’s theme is ‘Locals Connecting Locals,’ and Wyndham City-managed Community Centres are celebrating the week by hosting a range of fun, free and low-cost activities.
A community breakfast will be held at Iramoo Community Centre, a community party will kick off at Penrose Promenade Community Centre, and the week will be rounded out with a Mother’s Day Market hosted at Saltwater Community Centre
Wyndham City Learning City portfolio holder, Cr Jasmine Hill said: “Wyndham Community Centres are the roots of our community, providing the essential foundations for our residents to grow and thrive.”
“Our Community Centres offer people connection, opportunity and inspiration.”
“I encourage our residents to get involved as this is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to join this nationwide initiative to come together to celebrate, and to discover the transformative power of life-long learning and personal development,” said Cr Hill.
Residents are encouraged to check out their local community centre this week. For more information, visit: www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/nhw23
