City of Hobart congratulates the new King

The City of Hobart congratulates His Majesty King Charles III’s ascension to the throne of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms, including Australia.
On the occasion of the coronation Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds congratulated King Charles on his long-standing advocacy for the environment and for contributing to increased awareness of the impact of global climate change.
She said Hobart citizens recognised his leadership role in this area over many years, because he had challenged people to think more critically about contemporary issues of shared global concern.
“The City share’s His Majesty’s passion around the challenges of climate change and looks forward to his continued advocacy in this area and wish him well in his reign,” Cr Reynolds said.
King Charles III has visited Hobart on multiple occasions most recently with the then Duchess of Cornwall (now Queen Consort) in 2012.
Previous visits include:
1994 with a visit to the Whittle Palliative Care Unit and Wilson Training Centre. 1981 where he opened Australia’s first Antarctic headquarters, the Australian National Antarctic Research headquarters, in Kingston. 1983 when travelling with Princess Diana, where they greeted the people of Hobart and attended a state reception at the Wrest Point Hotel. 1977 during a tour of the country to meet young Australians. 1970 tour with Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip and Princess Anne where a ‘Meet the People’ occasion was the main event, with the royals walking down Macquarie Street and interacting with the people of Hobart along the way. This tour saw an estimated 70,000 people waiting to greet them at Hobart Airport and lining the route of the motorcade into the city.Hobart like all Australian capital cities was bestowed with a Lord Mayor title for its Mayor by King Charles’s great grandfather, King George 5th.
