Burnie City Council is working on two exciting projects under the banner of Burnie Beats to find and create the beating heart of Burnie by revitalising the CBD and gateway entries to the city.
The State Government funded gateway initiative will assist councils in the North West to beautify and improve the visual aesthetic of the entrances to their cities, for the local community and visitors to the area.
The pataway / Burnie Gateway project will enhance key entrances to the City of Burnie through the design and installation of three gateways that will instantly identify Burnie city, promote a sense of arrival, complement existing infrastructure, and convey a clear community identity.
Council advertised in March for artists to respond to an Expression of Interest and are excited to announce that three Tasmanian artists/artist teams have been shortlisted to develop concept designs for the pataway / Burnie Gateway project.
The selected artists are:
Antonia Aitken Futago David Hamilton and Geoff Farquhar-Still.The three artists/artist teams ran workshops in April to understand the community’s aspirations, vision and love for their city to assist in the development of their designs.
Concept designs will be presented to Council in the middle of June and one artist/artist team will be selected to progress their design, build and install the gateways.
The winning design will be displayed in the Council foyer from the end of June.
Fabrication of the gateways will occur over the later part of 2023 with installation in early 2024 with completion of the gateways by March 2024.
