Celebrate the opening of the Kerang All Abilities Play Space

Celebrations will be held at Atkinson Park, Kerang on Saturday, 27 May as Kerang marks the official opening of the Kerang All Abilities Play Space and Changing Places facility.

Occurring as part of the May edition of the Kerang Community Market, the opening will celebrate the installation of the third all abilities play space to be built in the Gannawarra, as well as the creation of the region’s first Changing Places facility.

“Since the project’s completion in October 2022, residents and visitors have benefited from these significant improvements to one of Kerang’s popular recreational spaces,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.

The $1.1 million project, supported by a $1 million contribution from the State Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program, involved construction of an all abilities play space adjacent to the Atkinson Park playground. Opened to the public in August 2022, the play space features in-ground trampolines, a log scramble area, water play areas and a wheelchair accessible sway fun swing.

“Residents and visitors have already embraced this new play space, which has provided greater opportunities for socialisation and physical activity,” Mr Rollinson said.

The project also included construction of the region’s first Changing Places facility, with this new building providing suitable facilities for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets – including a height-adjustable adult-sized change table, ceiling track hoist system and a peninsular-structured toilet.

“This new facility has opened up the Gannawarra and the wider region to people of all abilities, which is a win-win for visitors and our local economy,” Mr Rollinson said.

Official proceedings will occur on the day at 11am at the play space, with the May edition of the Kerang Community Market occurring next to the play space from 9am to 12 noon, featuring food trucks and various market stalls offering local handmade crafts, toys, fresh produce, plants and other items.
