Yorke Peninsula Council thanks volunteers

Yorke Peninsula Council held a special morning tea to thank volunteers from throughout the region on Tuesday, May 16.

Mayor Darren Braund hosted the event at the Minlaton Town Hall as part of National Volunteer Week, 16-21 May.

“On behalf of our Council and the community I want to acknowledge and thank every volunteer for their dedication to the region,” Mayor Braund said.

“Yorke Peninsula has many volunteers from Progress Associations and sporting clubs through to Tidy Towns and emergency services volunteers.

“Without volunteers our communities just wouldn’t function the way they do.”

About 70 volunteers attended the event, which included a Q&A with Stansbury Progress Association chairman Don McPhee ad Yorke Peninsula Netball Association president Sue Brown.

Sue Brown has been part of the Yorke Peninsula Netball Association for about 20 years and served as president for about 14 years.

She has also been involved with other local sporting groups including cricket, netball and hockey.

Don McPhee is an active member of the Stansbury community and has been involved with the Progress Association for about 14 years serving mainly as Vice Chairman or Chairman.

He has also spent the past 16 years as a member of the Stansbury Tidy Towns Group, seven of those as the coordinator.

National Volunteer Week is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering and this year’s theme was The Change Makers.

Yorke Peninsula Council supports volunteering efforts in a variety of ways including annual allocations to Progress Associations, sponsorships and donations (subject to applications), event approvals and more.

“Volunteering brings people together, it builds communities and creates a better society for everyone,” Mayor Braund said.

“National Volunteer Week is a chance for all of us to celebrate and recognise the vital work of volunteers and to say thank you.”
