The City of Parramatta has hosted its first ever youth debate in the Council Chamber at PHIVE.
Year 10 and 11 students from Arthur Phillip High School and Macarthur Girls High School debated the case for and against whether a popularly-elected Lord Mayor would better serve the City and its community.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Donna Davis said Council was firmly focused on engaging with youth in the community.
“This is the first time we’ve hosted a debate like this for senior students, giving them a chance to exchange their ideas in the same chamber as their councillors do at council meetings,” Cr Davis said.
“We want to know what the next generation really thinks about key issues in the community.
“It’s just one of the ways we’re engaging with youth in the community to better understand their aspirations for our City and tap into their ideas for shaping the future of Parramatta.”
Next week the City of Parramatta will host TedxSydney Youth for the first time at Riverside Theatres where five young people will get the chance to pitch their big idea for the future of the City.
